Contraindications to Laser Hair Removal!

Your laser specialist will ask you about your medical history & medications – they are enquiring for the safety of your skin going forward with this treatment! You may need to get a GPs approval letter for some of these conditions to go ahead with treatment if required!

• Pregnant or Breast Feeding
• If you are undergoing cancer treatment or in recovery
• Melanoma
• Lupus
• Epilepsy
• Diabetes
• Lipoma
• If you are taking Accutane ( must be off accutane for at least 6 months )
• Blood / Skin Thinning Medication
• Antibiotics or Steroids (must be off these for 2 weeks pre treatment)
• Bacterial / Viral or Fungal Infections
• Recent Surgery in the area
• Recent Semi – Permanent Make-Up, Filler, Botox in the area

Essential Pre-Treatment Laser Care:

• It is your responsibility to arrive to each of your treatments with the area to be treated clean shaved. Shave the area 8 to 12 hours prior to your treatment with a new razor. Shaving immediately prior to your treatment may cause extra sensitivity to the skin. Your laser specialist will not be able to shave the areas for you!
• You must avoid sun exposure to the area for at least 3-4 weeks pre & post treatment! This is for the safety of your own skin – you are prone to burning your skin mixing laser & sun exposure too close together. It could lead to a bad sunburn, and further leading to hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation! Please take care of your skin, and always wear SPF 50 in the summer months & on sun holidays.
• NO ANTIBIOTICS / STEROIDS for 2 weeks before your laser treatment. Antibiotics & Steroids thin out your skin – making you prone to a skin reaction or burn on the day of treatment. Please inform your laser therapist if you are taking any medication!
• BLOOD / SKIN THINNERS (WARFARIN) are not recommended for Laser Hair Removal! (unless you are taking a low dosage ex. Aspirin) It is best to get a GPs letter of approval if you are on a blood/skin thinner to go ahead  with laser hair removal.
• No PAIN RELIEF for 24 hours before your treatment. This can lead to sensitivity of your skin on the day of treatment!
• NO FAKE TAN on the areas being treated! Please start to remove your fake tan at least a week before your laser appointment.
• ONLY SHAVING is allowed between laser treatments. You cannot wax, thread, tweeze or use depilatory creams throughout your course of laser treatments.
• Do NOT exfoliate the area for 24 hours prior to your treatment to avoid irritation to the skin.
• Please avoid using harsh products on the skin for a few days pre – laser treatment ( 7 days – Retinol/ Retin A)
• Wear loose clothes to your appointment – to allow your skin to breathe post treatment.

Essential Post-Treatment Laser Care:

• Avoid sun exposure for at least 3-4 weeks pre & post treatment! This is for the safety of your skin – to prevent a burn or reaction within the skin. Which then could lead to hyper-pigmentation or hypo-pigmentation. Please take care of your skin, and always wear SPF 50 in the summer months & on sun holidays.
• You may experience a pink/red appearance to your skin post treatment & small bumps especially at the beginning of your laser journey. This is your follicles swelling – which is completely normal response to treatment for thick hairs. If your skin feels warm and irritated for a few hours post treatment – you can take a cold shower, and apply a cooling agent (Aloe Vera, Sudocream, Tea Tree).
• Please avoid heated treatments for at least 48 hours post laser (Hot Showers, Baths, Sauna, Jacuzzi, Swimming, Gym, Intense Workout)
• Do NOT apply anything harsh to the area for at least 1 week post treatment (Retinol / Retin A / Glycolic Acid / Vitamin C)
• Avoid purfume & deodorant for 48 hours post treatment. ‘APG Tech Soothing Spray Deodorant’ is available here in clinic – which is safe to use on the treated area 2 hours after treatment & during your course, plus it smells divine!
• You may experience redness or swelling of each hair follicle in the treated area, which may last up to 6 hours. Erythema may last up to 2 to 3 days. Continue to apply your APG Tech Delicate Soothing Fluid with a cool compress for comfort if need be.
• You must exfoliate your skin 5-7 days pre & post laser treatment – to ensure all the hairs come to the surface of the skin, to fall out & to prevent ingrown hairs. We have ‘APG Tech Renewing Cream’ available here in clinic.

Why do I need a consultation & patch test?

Everyone beginning their laser journey here with us in Bliss Beauty, Skin & Laser must have a Laser Hair Removal consultation & a patch test. These will be done in the same time slot. A consultation is required to ensure you are suitable for this treatment, and to allow your laser therapist gain a knowledge on the history of your hair & skin. A patch test is an allergy test – to ensure your skin does not react to the treatment! You must wait 48 hours post patch test before you can have your first laser treatment with us. If you have not had laser hair removal done with us in a long period of time, you must have another patch test – to ensure there has been no skin changes.

Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?

Along with everything it depends on the individual & their sensitivity, on tender areas like your upper lip, bikini & underarms – you will feel the laser here, but it is very bareable and fast!

How many treatments will I need?

As an individual each clients plan can be different, in general we will recommend between 8-12 sessions to begin with. Your laser therapist will not be able to predict to the exact amount how many treatments you will need, but they will make a rough estimation. How many sessions you may need will come down to the colour & texture of your hair, your skin type, your medical history, your pain threshold, genetics etc. Your laser specialist will advise you of ‘top up’ treatments after your course is finished. This will be more frequent at the beginning of the end of your full course, and then you can space this out further & further each time. Everyone is different with how many top ups they do, & if they feel they need to do them or not. Doing 1 session every 3-6 months is roughly what we advise. Doing maintenance treatments keeps on top of your results!

How often do I need to get the treatment done?

Initially, we recommend every 4 weeks for the face & 6 weeks for the body. This time will increase as your hair growth reduces, when you are in the ‘top up’ phase. It is vital we catch the hairs in their active phase of growth for the treatment to be most effective & work as quickly as possible. Your therapist will recommend the best timeline for you!

What hair colour / skin type works best with Laser Hair Removal?

The darker the hair colour, the paler the skin! This allows your laser specialist to be able to gradually bring up the strength of the machine to its full potential! The darker the hair colour – the easier it is for the laser to catch the hair in a session. The lighter the skin colour, the higher we can gradually bring up the laser machine. Dark skin colours are prone to burning or hyper-pigmentation / hypo-pigmentation!

How much does Laser Hair Removal cost?

In the long run laser hair removal will save you money on razors, waxing, hair removal creams etc. It may seem a little pricey upfront, but when you break it down over the course of your treatments, it is a lot more affordable than you think! Are there any side effects?

As with any treatment there can always be side effects, however laser is considered a very low risk treatment. Your therapist will explain all the possible side effects to you during your consultation & carry out a patch test to determine the likelihood of any reactions occurring. Some redness & sensitivity can occur in the first 48 hours post treatment – which is completely normal!
